    Dead battery - Just me?

Just gone to pull the XR out for a ride this morning and the bike was dead, have hooked the battery up to the optimate and so I'm sure that'll sort it.

Just wondered if anybody else had experienced a similar issue or whether its just a freak occurrence?

Havent ride the bike in the last month what with family holidays and work, neither did i have it on the optimate during that time. None the less i wouldn't have expected it to just die like that so perhaps something else is wrong and its not getting the charge

Still, could be worse......i suppose if the battery was ok and the bike didn't start that'd technically be more worrying :)

I've one a fair bit with bike batteries and to honest once they are over 12 months old anything is possible from them going kaput to them lasting another 6/7 years plus I know yours came from Chester so how did they and the previous treat it last winter, just charge it and say 3 Hail Marys  :001:

Not just you. I had this happen when I had to be away and left the bike standing for 3 weeks.  It was found to be the "canbus controller" which was not completely shutting the power off and was putting a small load on the battery. It took AJ and Germany about a week to find the fault, get the part here and reprogramme. That was last November and it's been perfect since then. I'd get it checked out by BUMW. BTW I also got a nice bit of compo from BMW to the tune of £500.

Had my battery go belly up at less than a year after I left it off the charger for about 10 days.  But even then the battery wouldn't top off with the charger.  BMW replaced under warranty.  Using trickle chargers I can get years out batteries w/o any issues.

I never trickle charge any of my batteries April-October. Just ride the bikes. I remove the batteries from the bikes and bring them out of the garage and into the house around November. Then charge them over night once a month until March. Never had any problems. I'm not sold on the benefits of leaving an optimate connected permenantly.

Well in the last ten years using optimates the BMW is the only battery thats failed on 4 bikes. All of which are older than the BMW.

There is some conjecture that the battery on the XR is a little undersized. If I was paying for replacement I would go for the bigger one that is fitted with the alarm.

Changed my standard battery before I went away this year. Original would not stay charged, unless it was the Optimate.
New one has been no problem, but I do keep all of my bikes on Trickle chargers. Never had a problem, with them but I do not run the optimate, through the plugin point,On the XR. I use a permanent plug attached directly, to the battery. Avoids any problems with the canbus system that way.
