    BMW S1000XR and M1000XR

I went to the NEC on Saturday 18th November.

I saw the M1000XR - it was clearly pre-production as it was on a plinth and untouchable.

A great machine but a minimum of £23,000 and in full M setup - £28,000
They will not be available till April.

I have a Gen 2 S1000XR  Sport 2021 model with most, useful extras.
Its only done 10,000 miles and has no faults.

I was thinking and able to afford the M modem. But thinking it through whats the point for me? Especially an old geezer of 61 almost 62.
It does everything for me. Touring and commuting.

I think I will keep my bike by purchasing it outright from BMW as it was on a PCP. The lease ends June - so I have some time to think about it.

This is my fourth S1000XR ( 1 stolen - 3 lease ended). Rather pleased with them. Previous bikes K1300S, K1600GT
anyone got any useful views - considering my position?

Not particularly useful, but I had a deposit on an MXR and ended up switching up and ordering an R1300GS instead.  I have two XRs ('18 and '21) and they are both excellent and do what I need them to do.  The MXR has no capability to carry anything which is a negative for me and most/all of the power is going to be at the top of the rev range and I no longer do track days so for the street I decided it would largely be unusable.  I also don't particularly care for black bikes and winglets so the aesthetics aren't really there for me either.  I have owned adv and dual sport bikes in the past so I figured it would be more fun and useful for me to get another GS (had a parallel twin GS about 10 years ago) and do some off the beaten path exploring rather than get what is essentially a sport bike that has way too much unusable overlap with my two existing XR's.

    many thanks for your input.

I do a lot of commuting into London, so like the narrowness of the Gen 2 ( vs Gen1) and the power when I need it.

I have also gone on long journey's so it ticks the touring box. But I will recover my seat - as that could be more comfortable.

I like GS (had) and XR (have). For what it's worth here is my way of comparing bikes. Can do 1300 too but something wrong in bmw advertised 1300 gear ratios. This takes the torque curve in 100rpm steps (bit of work), recalculates it per gear, then the speed table picks up the torque value (vlookup function). As I have speed I use theoretical air resistance and driveline loss to achieve realistic top end speed. Spoiler: Drive shaft does eat power

Now you have remaining rear wheel torque versus bike speed. Still meaningless, but if you rework that to traction force, and then divide by each bike's weight you get a number I understand, still available acceleration in G (or mtr/sec^2). Anything over 10 is potential wheelies.

I have also just let go an M-XR reservation and have ordered a lowered S-XR instead due to the lack of a lowered chassis option on the M-XR. I was initially disappointed but, when I read the owner's manual for the M-XR and saw that the DTC control on the left bar (which replaces the ESA switch of the S-XR) has 14 settings of traction control levels to work through, I realised BMW is not targeting the bike at my kind of riding levels. It sounds silly, maybe, but I realised that that was one large rocker switch I was never going to touch. Ever. And I couldn't see the point of buying a bike that clearly was not attuned to my level of ability.
Also, those winglets. I think I would have had a hard time explaining to my mates what they were doing on a bike I owned.

Think ill be keeping my gen 1, had it from new. I prefer the rawness compared to the gen 2 and does everything i want (except track)low chassis model for my short legs and i would have to put a lot of money towards an M.

BMW rep at the NEC told me it was an upright S1000RR track bike really.

Hence, looking at it, its not for me either.

My bike is coming up to 10,000 miles and 3 years. its like new, why change?

Major differences between Gen 2 and 3 are:
    Seat
    Cornering headlamps
    5HP more at the top

Cant be bothered to change for a large bill per month......

    Or am I missing something?
