Exhaust / Catalytic converter glowing red

Having a bit of an issue with my mates 2017 XR it has got 18k on the clock.

Randomly one day riding home from work it started to splutter and did not want to go, it was really lumpy but managed to limp it back home. When he got home he noticed the left side (nearest to the side stand) of the cat was glowing red/orange. I can attach photos if needed.

I suggested the cat had blocked/broken down inside and was stopping the engine from breathing hence why it was spluttering. He has managed to get a second hand set of headers for £120 from ebay but it is now glowing worse. There was no guarantee this second hand cat was working and may have the same fault but for that price it was worth a try. He tested the butterfly valve and that was seized and so was the solenoid so he has replaced both of them onto the new pipe and it glows worse.

    Any ideas?

Engine management light is not on

A glowing catalyst is a sign of too much fuel being burned.
I would suspect a misfire that is creating a very rich mixture getting to the cat thus causing it to overheat and  glow

As above, more than likely a spark plug or coil have gone us. You could check for a cold(er) header pipe with temperature gun.

Took my cat off years ago to fit Akra headers so I know they were working fine, you are welcome borrow them as you must be fairly local to me in the WM,but in reality you need a GS911.

You were spot on as was @simonuk. Turned out it was one of the ignition coils had failed. Now that's been changed it runs like a dream again ☺️
