Understood, but wouldnt riding away normally without the revving heat the Cat as fast, rather than waiting for the revs to drop? Haven't seen any other bike that does this. Will report back after my dealer visit next week

This is 100% normal, almost every EFI vehicle does this in, some more than others, some more when it's cold some less. This is definitely a measure to get the bike up to temp, serves the same purpose as a choke on old carbed bikes. The cat heating part is dubious but it's just to get the engine oil up to temp whilst there is no load on the engine, riding away whilst the oil is still cold, puts load on the parts before lubrication is up to optimal levels.

How would the manufacturer know that you’ll ride away straight away? They have to tick all the boxes for every scenario…  :002:

Yes I had tool bag it is It should be in the bottom of the seat: when you lift off the seat look under it and it should be in there.

Unfortunately your dealer is incorrect, it won’t go away after the first service, it has nothing to do with running in etc. EURO5 targets Nox and hydrocarbon emissions. It’s particularly challenging during cold start when catalytic converters are cold. By reving the engine high when it’s cold, the cats start working faster. It’s all to do with euro 5 emissions I’m afraid

Did the NC500 last week with a group of other bikes and got a number of comments each time I started the bike after a coffee stop when the revving started - you cant really drive off straight away without a large clunk when you select 1st gear so you have to leave the bike in first gear which is not a major problem.

As others have said, this is not "fixed" at first service, when my engine is warm/hot it revs less-high and for shorter, but still there:-) Peter
